About the session

Tourism and the visitor economy is lacking the mature space to create effective and agile solutions to the complex challenges it faces. Unlike other industries, it has been slow to adopt a human-centred design approach, instead relying on outdated methods that are product and growth-focused.

Is a UX approach the solution that tourism and the visitor economy has been missing and can it help DMOs (destination marketing organisations) and SMEs to transform into the next economy?

Katie Anne Jowett

Katie is all about developing sustainable tourism and visitor experiences that have positive social and economic impacts on communities. Starting and developing her career in customer engagement in the HE sector, where she was first introduced to UX by her mentor RRR, she now uses UX and design thinking to develop agile and sustainable solutions to the challenges being faced in the visitor economy, working with businesses, organisations and DMOs to do so.

Currently completing her second master's (tourism and consumer studies at Aalborg University, Denmark), Katie has spent the last 2 years working in tourism in Denmark and Australia, while researching tourism in Scotland. She is a freelancer working in the arts and culture sector. She holds a theatre studies MLitt (University of Glasgow) and an English and history MA (University of Dundee). A lifelong learner, she is currently studying French, Scots Gaelic and Welsh.
