Design work rarely happens in perfect conditions.

Most of us are working with tighter timelines, smaller budgets and increasingly complex challenges and systems. As UX folk, we’re expected to deliver impact with fewer resources while keeping inclusion, accessibility, and users in mind.

This year at UX Scotland, we’re exploring that reality.

Our 2026 theme is ‘Constraint as a catalyst’. We’ll be exploring how we can do better design in the era of limitations, and how we can turn those constraints into creativity, impact and leadership.

Why this theme, and why now?

Working under constraints is fast becoming the rule, not the exception. Post-pandemic, many of us got a taste of working in a crisis, and some of that feeling hasn’t gone away.

So if it’s the new normal, we need to embrace it, or get left behind. We’ll be exploring things like:

  • How to deliver quality when resources are tight
  • Prioritisation frameworks for lean teams
  • Creating psychological safety in constrained teams
  • Building trust and influence without formal authority
  • Strategic use of AI and emerging technologies
  • Making decisions under public-sector or complex policy constraints

We’ll be shaping our programme around practical learning, real-world examples, and inspiring guidance from people who are doing the work every day.

What will we be talking about?

Making it work: Hands-on. Pragmatic. Grounded in delivery.

One element we will focus on is the reality of design under pressure. We’re looking for practical tools, frameworks, and case studies that you can take straight back to your team.

We’ll be looking for sessions exploring topics like…

Practice Under Pressure - How to deliver meaningful design outcomes when time, resources, or data are limited.

  •  Leading with Less - How leadership practices can amplify outcomes under resource constraints.
  • Hands-On Resilience - Deep dive workshops to help build resilience in how we work, think and collaborate.

Making it matter: Aspirational. Impactful. Forward-looking.

We’ll also be exploring how we can move beyond doing the work and look at making the work count, and how to influence at organisational and system levels.

We’ll be looking for sessions exploring topics like…

  • Creative Impact - How can teams turn constraints into creative advantage, delivering meaningful, accessible, and inclusive solutions, including in public-sector contexts
  • Leadership and Systems Thinking - How leadership, strategy, and systemic thinking transform constraint into long-term value. We want sessions that focus on scaling impact, guiding teams, and influencing organisations.
  • From Constraint to Impact - Hands-on sessions focused on influence and organisational change. We want workshops that move people from doing design to shaping how design happens.

The TL:DR

Across the two days, every session is encompassed by the theme ‘ Constraint as a Catalyst’ and covering these core ideas.

  • Creative Practice – Craft, UX, content, and research techniques under constraints
  • Leadership and Influence – Leading teams, decision-making, coaching, and strategy
  • Systems and Impact – Scaling design, service design, public sector, ethical and sustainable outcomes
  • Accessibility and Inclusion – Designing for everyone, ensuring equity even when resources are limited
  • Innovation and Experimentation – Using constraints to inspire creative solutions, AI, emerging tech, and new methods
  • Resilient careers – Job hunting and progression in difficult times, burn out and resetting in a sustainable way.

Together, we’ll learn how to harness the power of constraints, how to make it work, and how to make it matter.
