About this Case Study
User Experience Designers enjoy sculpting the happy path through an application, but users do not always do what we expect, and they will push the limits. We must design for the unexpected, the scenarios that occur at the extremes, the edge cases. However, designing for every possible edge case can result in an application that can be overly convoluted and ultimately lose your client business, and alienate your users.
This session will focus on some specific examples we have encountered through designing complex systems for financial clients, and offer some practical advice on how to determine the basic economic question: Does the cost of designing for and building out a solution for a particular edge case match or outweigh the benefit that this will bring to the application?
About the Speaker
Courtney is a User Experience Designer at Scott Logic, a software consultancy working for clients in complex domains.
She primarily designs applications for clients in Capital Markets, but has also worked on a variety of other interesting types of projects including conversational commerce, IoT and Fintech.
